The Northeast Conference Media Day kicked off in the Meadowlands on Wednesday, and it brought the opportunity to welcome the Robert Morris Colonials back to the conference for their second stint after five years in the Big South-OVC.
The Colonials had bright spots on both sides of the ball like dazzling wide receiver Noah Robinson and standout linebacker Jamar Shegog.
Both players, along with Merrimack running back Tyvon Edmonds Jr. and defensive lineman Tizlam Muhammad, were named to the All-NEC Preseason Team.
The Colonials were also voted third in the conference’s preseason poll announced on Wednesday.
Revamped and Ready to Compete
Head Coach Bernard Clark shared his excitement being in a new conference sharing about the team’s energy.
“We don’t have the funding for summer school but we still had about 60 guys up there volunteering their summer and ready to get going.” Clark said.
“We already started watching film throughout the summer,” Shegog said. “We’re watching every team and breaking down quarterbacks. It’s gonna take a lot more preparing but we’re gonna be ready for it.”
“I feel like it starts now, we had a great summer,” Robinson said. “We’re gonna keep watching film and we’re gonna keep getting better. We’re gonna beat a lot of teams.”
Standout Players Take The Mic
After a stellar year in the Big South, wide receiver Noah Robinson reeled in a conference-leading 70 receptions and racked up 846 yards and six touchdowns in his first year in a Colonial uniform.
Robinson was then asked about his strengths and his quarterback Anthony Chiccitt.
“For my strengths, I feel like there’s nothing I can’t do on the field,” Robinson said.“I feel like I can bring a lot from being a deep threat to short routes.”
This proved to be true after he put on a show last season at Joe Walton Stadium when he exploded for 147 yards against Saint Francis.
“Me and Chiccitt have been grinding since I got here, Chiccitt is my guy. We got really good chemistry together.”
Jamar Shegog, the hometown LB, was asked if he was given any tips from coach Clark, who played the same position for the Miami Hurricanes from 1985-1989.
“He was more of a C gap to C gap player,” Shegog said. “Obviously, he was a great player, He was an NFL guy, a national champion, So, we are taking in everything he teaches us.”
Robert Morris looks to take it to the next level as they get ready to compete in NEC ball this August. They open up the season against Utah State on Aug 3, where Coach Clark and the Colonials will look to start the season strong.
