Over the weekend, three-star recruit and Montverde Academy (FL) attendee TJ Wainwright made his official visit to Robert Morris, taking in their game against Green Bay while also getting a chance to experience campus.

Wainwright is a 6-foot-2, 170-pound guard from Los Angeles who spent the last season at Montverde in post-grad after holding offers from schools such as Pepperdine and Washington State.

Wainwright, who was offered on Jan. 13 by Robert Morris, talked about his experience and what he liked the most about the visit.

“This was my first real official visit with COVID and my post-grad year, so it was special to me,” Wainwright said. “I had a great time. The coaches showed me everything I needed to see. It was a great overall experience.”

Wainwright got to take in practice, got a tour of the facility and sat in a front-row seat for RMU’s 62-60 victory over Green Bay, also sitting on-court for warmups.

“Getting to experience a college-level practice and seeing college-level preparation for a game experience was my favorite part,” he said. “I got shots up and got to go in the locker room and really felt like a part of the team for the weekend. That was special and it was a good experience.”

In addition to that experience, Wainwright got to don the red, white and blue for the first time and take shots in uniform, something he particularly enjoyed.

“It felt great to put on the colors,” Wainwright said. “I felt like I looked good in the jersey and getting on the court, getting to shoot on it, it felt like a good fit for me.”

Many schools have shown an interest in Wainwright over the past year and a half. He expressed his thoughts on the recruiting process thus far.

“It was slow at first, then everything kind of opened up after the New Haven tournament; we got some good wins up there,” he said. “After that, it slowed down again and heated up once again after Robert Morris offered me.”

Recruitment can be stressful for many, but Wainwright talked about his favorite part of the process.

“The best part is winning games and knowing that you are getting better and that you can showcase your ability every game,” Wainwright said. “I feel like if I am doing that, people are going to see that and they are going to find me if you are producing and putting up the numbers.”

Wainwright said that he would bring a “dawg” mentality to whatever program he ends up committing to. He also mentioned that he does not like to lose and brings a winning persona with him, hoping to bring that along with him from high school to college.

As the college basketball regular season begins to wind down over the next couple of weeks, it seems that Wainwright’s recruiting journey is also coming to an end.

Wainwright discussed the next big step he was going to take, planning on committing to his school within the next week.
