Former Robert Morris women’s basketball player Vega Gimeno-Martinez earned a silver medal for her efforts on the Spanish National 3v3 team. The gold-medal match between Martinez’s Spain and Germany took place Aug 5, with the Spaniards losing 15-18, but still taking home a silver medal. To get there, Martinez had to go though eventual Bronze medal winners, the United States.
Even though she played one season as a Colonial, Martinez’s contribution to the team was exceptional. She led the team in 3 pointers made with 54 and placed second on the team for scoring. Her game averages of 10.3 PPG and 4.8 RPG earned her a spot on the NEC All-Rookie team.
The next season, the small-forward packed her bags and went to play in her home of Spain for Baloncesto Rivas, a team in the top tier of Spanish Women’s Basketball. Martinez would spend 14 seasons in Liga Femenina, winning the league once and winning the cup 3 times. She also was the best national scorer in 2021 for Ensino Lugo.
Martinez has also found great success in 3v3 basketball, winning gold in 2021 and silver in 2023 at the FIBA 3v3 European Cup.
Martinez retired from 5v5 Basketball at the end of this previous season, but committed to playing for her country in the Olympics. With her loss Monday, Martinez is planning to retire from the sport.
