Preview: Colonials look to end losing streak against UPJ

MOON TOWNSHIP — The Robert Morris Colonials women’s basketball team takes on the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown Mountain Cats on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the North Athletic Complex at noon. The Colonials at (1-7) overall with losing streak that increased to six with their last loss to the Kent State Golden Flashes (4-4) overall. The final score of that game was 54 to 46 in favor of the Golden Flashes and the Colonials has the lead in the first quarter but the Golden Flashes gained the lead and did not give it up. The Mountains Cats last game they played Kutztown University Golden Bears (3-6) and the final result of the game was 67 to 49 in favor of the Golden Bears. The Golden Bears had the lead almost the entire game and did not give the Mountains Cats have any chance to come back.

The last game the Colonials played was against the Kent State Golden Flashes. Nneka Ezeigbo had scored 18 points and Ire Ozzy-Momodu had eight rebounds while Golden Flashes’ Alexa Golden scored 11 points and her teammate Merissa Barber-Smith 10 rebounds in the game. On the season so far the Colonials have outshot their opponents in three-point shots with 66 while their opponents has 46.

The Cats last game was against the Kutztown University Golden Bears and Gabrielle Smith scored 14 points for the Cats while her teammate Maddie Shanahan had eight rebounds. The Golden Bears powered the Cats when Rylee Derr scored 15 points in the game and teammate Brianna Tarabocchia with 11 rebounds. The Mountain Cats have a three game losing streak coming into this game against the Colonials. The teams has been outscored by their opponent 644 to 618 and have been outshoot in field goals shots with 201 while their opponents have 234. They do outscore their opponent 181 to 125. they did not have as many steals as their opponents with 61 while their opponent has 109.

The players to watch for the Colonials are junior forward Nadege Pluviose, junior center Nneka Ezeigbo and sophomore guard Megan Callahan.

Pluviose leads the team in rebounds with 52, has 28 offensive rebounds, she is third on the team with 10 steals and was third in defensive rebounds with 24.

Ezeigbo leads the team in almost every category of scoring starting with 27 defensive rebounds, has 12 blocked shot, and has 19 offensive rebounds, and had 88 total points scored. She is also strong as a free-throw shooter as she has made 16-23 free throws on the year.

Callahan is close behind Ezeigbo in the different scoring categories she has the most three point field goal shots made with 16, the same as fellow teammate Honoka Ikematsu. Callahan is second in three point field goal shot attempts with 38 behind Ikematsu who has 40, she is second in field goal attempts with 69, has made 24 of those shots and she has a total of 68 points scored on the season so far.

The players to watch for the Mountain Cats are junior forward/guard Gabrielle Smith, junior forward Alli McGrath, sophomore forward Maddie Shanahan.

Smith led the team in offensive rebounds with 21, was second in defensive rebounds with 43, and with a total 64 rebounds, 23 assists, 16 steals, 11 blocked shots, and she made 94 free throw shots of 114. She was also second field goal attempts with 115 and made 52 of those shots.

McGrath led the team in field goal attempts with 155 and made 65 of those shots, and has made 22 of 65 three point shots. She was second free throw attempts with 33 and made 28 of those shots, she has 10 offensive rebounds,she was third with 40 defensive, with 50 rebounds in total, 20 assists, 15 steals and 5 blocked shots.

Shanahan was third in field goals attempts with 64 and made 30 of those shots, has made 18 of 24 free throw shots, offensive rebounds with 13 but led with 45 defensive rebounds,12 assists, 3 steals, and 6 blocked shots.

The next game for the Colonials is on the Delaware State Hornets were (2-5) overall, (2-2) at home, and (0-3) away on Tuesday December 18th at the North Athletic Complex at 10 am.
