Preview: Men’s soccer travels to Howard for their last nonconference game of the season

The Robert Morris University Colonials men’s soccer team (1-6-1) will round out their non-conference play against the Howard University Bisons (1-3-2) at Greene Stadium on Saturday, September 22nd at 1 p.m. The Bisons only win is at home while the Colonials are 0-3-1 at on the road.

Both teams have been having a hard time scoring during the first part of the season, with both teams scoring just seven times so far this season. While both teams have tried to use the passing game to score goals, they are still falling short. The Bisons only have four assists while the Colonials have six assists. Both teams have had one penalty kick attempt each, Howard was successful in making the goal while the Colonials have failed to put the ball in the net.

The Colonials and the Bisons have had a fair amount of scoring opportunities with the Bisons having 50 shot attempts and the Colonials having generated an outstanding 88 shot attempts. In those scoring chances, the shots on goal percentage for the Colonials is .466 while Howard’s shots on goal percentage are .480.

Both these teams have players from last season that have experience playing in collegiate level soccer even though the Bisons added eight freshmen to their roster this season and the Colonials added nine to theirs.

In overtime or double overtime, the Colonials are 0-1-1. Howard, on the other hand, has only been to overtime in one of their games and that contest ended in a draw as well.

While the offense has not been great, their defense has been the highlight so far. From the defenses on both teams, Howard has 22 saves while the Colonials have 37. In six starts, Colonials goalie Winter Fondi has registered 25 saves. That’s a sharp contrast from Howard’s goalie Carlos Caro who has 14 saves in five starts on the season. The Bisons have had 12 goals scored against them while the Colonials have had 11 goals scored against them.

The Colonials first conference game is away against the Bryant Bulldogs on September 28th at 3:00 p.m.
