On a record-setting day for individuals and the team alike, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team shot their way to another Northeast Conference victory. The Colonials (5-11, 3-2) narrowly defeated the Saint Francis Brooklyn Terriers (4-13, 1-4) by a score of 67-64.

Shots from beyond the arc were at a premium in this NEC match-up, with the teams going a combined 19-of-37 from the three-point line. As a team, RMU accomplished two feats from downtown: they tied the team record in threes made (13), and they shot a season-high 62 percent from there.

Although, both players and coaches understand that was not necessarily a completely positive feat.

“That’s the positive part, that we hit them,” said head coach Sal Buscaglia. “The negative part is you can’t always count on the threes. You want to get the ball inside more. But I thought they were big shots, and the kids weren’t afraid to take big shots in a close game. That was very positive.”

Anna Niki Stamolamprou echoed these sentiments. “It was great making all those shots, but we need to trust our inside game more because if you miss shots, we need to play inside.”

This game was a nail-biter all the way through; the largest lead held by either squad was only seven, while the lead changed 12 times.

Several momentum shifting plays shaped the course of the contest, mostly coming from three-pointers. At the end of the first half, with the game tied at 29 and 48 seconds left to play, clutch threes from Rebeca Navarro and Stamolamprou closed out the half with six consecutive points to give Robert Morris a 35-29 lead.

Stamolamprou led the Colonials with 23 points, which set a new career-high for her. Ashley Ravelli passed the ball well, dishing out five assists while dropping in 10 points. Navarro also added nine points, all of which came via crucial three-point shots.

Halfway through the second half, the halftime lead of six had vanished. However, down 48-47 with 10:36 showing on the clock, Robert Morris promptly went on an 8-0 run, sparked by a Lou Mataly trey.

RMU never gave the lead back to the Terriers.

Twice over the last minute of the game did Saint Francis Brooklyn cut the deficit to one point, but stellar free-throw shooting by the Colonials held them off in the remaining seconds.

Robert Morris shot a season-high 52.3 percent from the floor, largely due to the success from outside.

As far as being a carryover from their recent offensive explosion, energy and confidence were discussed above everything else.

“We came out with a lot of energy last game [against Wagner],” said Ravelli. “And I think that we understood that coming out with this energy helped us win games, so that’s what we tried to do today as well.”

With the win, the Colonials continued their home NEC win streak, which now stands at 11 consecutive NEC wins within the confines of the Charles L. Sewall Center.

Robert Morris will again put this streak on the line on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 19, when they take on Sacred Heart. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
