Nov 6, 2022, was a bittersweet day for RMU men’s soccer. The team faced off against Oakland in round one of the Horizon League Playoffs, but through two overtime periods, neither side could break a 2-2 tie. The matchup was sent into penalty kicks, where Robert Morris had a heartbreaking end to their season after falling short in nine rounds.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday, this time on Colonials’ pitch. Oakland is coming into this matchup with a record of 5-7-2 (4-2-0 Horizon) and second place in Horizon League standings, while the Colonials are sitting at fifth with a 4-4-5 (2-2-2 Horizon) record.
The Colonials need to be on their toes regarding shots, especially from fifth-year forward Mikey Ketteman. He leads the Horizon League standings for most goals this season with seven after playing in all fourteen games.
Ketteman did not see action last season due to injury, so the Colonials were off the hook in the playoff matchup, but they will now need to keep an eye on him.
The Colonials have not yet met Donavan Phillip, a freshman midfielder/forward leading the team in assists with six so far and having three goals. He and Ketteman are two the Colonials need to look out for if in the RMU zone.
Robert Morris has proved all season that their goal scorers are across the board, so the Colonials need to continue to have players put shots on the net to keep up with the Golden Grizzlies.
Captain Gabe Norris is currently leading RMU in goals with four this season. While this number may not seem extremely high, there are twelve different goal scorers this season, so there is no one key scorer.
In their most recent matchup on Tuesday at Wake Forest, the Colonials were dealt a tough 5-1 loss to the Deacons, with Kai McLoughlin having the lone goal. McLoughlin has three goals this season, tied with Anass Hadran and John Paul Mbuthia.
The reunion matchup will occur at noon at the North Athletic Complex this Saturday, Oct. 21.
