The Robert Morris University Colonials claimed the victory over the St. Mary’s Gaels at Joe Walton Stadium on Friday, 22-11.

The Colonials started the game out with a great effort by scoring first about 1:30 into the first half. The offense used excellent passing to jump out ahead of St. Mary’s, leading 5-1 with 10 minutes played.

Although, when RMU started to cool off on both sides, the Gaels started catching up. With just over 12 minutes to play in the first half, St. Mary’s had narrowed the gap to 6-5.

Robert Morris then called a timeout to rethink its strategy to keep the Gaels from taking the lead. Following the timeout, the Colonials promptly went on an 8-1 run to close out the half, leading 13-6.

Senior midfielder Katie Breeze said RMU’s strategy had a lot to do with its large run.

“We just really wanted to come out hard and work on the stuff we’ve been implementing during practice,” said Breeze. “We have a new play that we implemented today and did pretty well with that.”

When asked about the performance shown from the first half, head coach Katy Phillips was satisfied with how quickly her team got into a rhythm.

“I think what we were looking to do in this game was to come out strong on a Friday,” Phillips said. “And this is the opportunity for us to come out strong. I think we pushed the gas and hit the fast break.”

Once the Colonials scored first in the second half to extend their lead to eight, they never let St. Mary’s get within less than that. RMU just kept pushing in the second half to coast to the 11-point victory.

The Robert Morris Colonials (2-2) continue their season when they head to play Yale University (1-1) on Feb. 26.
