MOON TOWNSHIP- The Robert Morris Colonials (5-7-1, 3-3-1 Horizon) took on the Detroit Mercy Titans (4-6-5, 3-2-3 Horizon) on Oct. 22. Both teams were looking to build on their previous match and have a strong finish to the year.

The first half started back and forth until Robert Morris broke through with a goal by Hugo Kadima.

The Titans would push back hard against the Colonials but a great defensive stand by the Colonials would help keep the lead.

The Titans would have another chance in the offensive zone but a great play by William Dodzi Afawubo would keep the ball out of the possession of the Titans near the net.

The Colonial offense would struggle during the first 25 minutes until a shot by Kadima was tipped just too high and over the net. The Robert Morris offense turned a switch and would get a multitude of chances after that, but Jonathan Kliewer would stand tall for Detroit Mercy. From minute 30 on, both teams would dig in defensively, and the rest of the half would be a stalemate.

The second half started with both teams getting good looks in the offensive zone. The Colonials would get the better of the chances early in the half.

In the 53rd minute of play, Chase Gilley would put one into the back of the net for the Colonials. That would be his fifth of the season and would put Robert Morris up by two.

Robert Morris would spring a breakaway but would be foiled by Daniel Larsson of Detroit Mercy. However, he would draw a red card and would leave the match.

Bryan Akongo would get a chance in the 58th minute that he thought was a sure goal, but he would be foiled by a last-ditch attempt by Andri Myftari on the goal line, keeping it a two-score lead for the Colonials.

Robert Morris would continue to push for another goal but could not find a way past Kliewer, who would continue to foil Robert Morris on offense making all kinds of plays to keep the ball out of the Detroit Mercy net.

The Colonial defense kept the ball out of danger’s way until Detroit Mercy broke through in the 70th minute. The Titans would fire the ball on the net, but Fredrich Petrelli would tip the shot just wide enough to keep the easy tip-in away from the Titans player and keep his shutout bid alive.

The Colonials would shut down the Titians and keep them off the board for a 2-0 win. Head Coach Jason O’Keefe talked about how the Colonials’ offense was able to play effectively against Detroit Mercy’s defense.

“They were big and they don’t give up a lot of goals but we wanted to have possession. I think when we went up a man, it was a lot easier to hold the ball. I think the guys moved that ball and wanted the ball.”

The Robert Morris Colonials will continue their season as they take on the Green Bay Phoenix on Oct. 29th at 8 p.m. in Wisconsin.
