#FormerColonialWatch: Brady Ferguson signs with Rögle BK
June 12, 2020
After spending two years in the Toronto Maple Leafs’ organization with the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers and AHL’s Toronto Marlies, former Robert Morris men’s hockey star Brady Ferguson has signed with Rögle BK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
Ferguson, who last played for the Colonials during the 2017-18 season, is the Colonials’ all-time points leader with 167, and all-time assists leader with 101. His 66 career goals are tied for third all-time with Greg Gibson (’16).
As a Colonial, Ferguson amassed three Atlantic Hockey Player of the Month awards and was named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Conference team in his junior and senior seasons.
After leaving the Colonials, Ferguson signed with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies. He saw action in five games during the 2017-18 season, recording four points; all assists.
The next season, Ferguson spent most of the year in St. John’s, Newfoundland, as a member of the Growlers. There, he put up a team-leading 30 goals and added 28 assists in only 48 games played. Ferguson also was called up to Toronto during the season, where he recorded one assist in eight games played.
In the ECHL’s Kelly Cup playoffs, Ferguson scored 24 points (7g, 17a) in 23 games to help lead the Growlers to their first-ever Kelly Cup championship in the franchise’s first season of play.
In the 2019-20 season, despite the league being cut short by the COVID-19 outbreak, Ferguson led the Growlers with 63 points (29g, 34a) at the time of the league’s shutdown on March 11. Ferguson’s 63 points were also tied for fifth in the ECHL.
In Rögle, Ferguson will be joining a team which includes former NHL players Éric Gélinas (55 career points between the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche) and Dennis Everberg (15 games played with Colorado), as well as Adam Edström, a 2019 6th round draft pick by the New York Rangers, and 2020 NHL Draft prospect Samuel Johannesson.
In the 2019-20 season, Rögle finished third in the SHL with a 25-7-3-17 record (52 points), however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no playoff games were able to be played.
In a tweet, Ferguson said “I wanted to express how thankful I am for the opportunity I had playing with the @TorontoMarlies and @NLGrowlers over the past two years. Winning the Kelly Cup was one of the best experiences of my hockey career. I will always consider St. John’s my home away from home.”
