Golf starts spring season strong at Gary Freeman Spring Invitational

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — In their first tournament back from break, the Robert Morris golf team (+298) had a strong showing in the Gary Freeman Spring Invitational at the LPGA International. The team finished third with a +53 tournament.
Winning the tournament were the Augusta University Jaguars, with a +12 tournament. From the Jaguars, McCullough Pickens had the lowest score, shooting an even par over both days.
For Robert Morris, they were led by Chase Miller, whose +3 tied him for second place. Miller shot the lowest round of anybody at the tournament, a -2 or 69 in the second round. Three strokes behind Miller, junior Max Palmer shot a +6 tournament, which included three birdies in the final round.
Finishing in a five-way tie for 11th, David Szymanski shot a +11 or 224. Szymanski’s highlight of the tournament was a pair of birdies and four pars in the first six holes in his final round. Four shots behind Szymanski was Kyle Grube. The junior from Indiana, Pennsylvania tied for 23rd with a +15. In Grube’s final round, he had two birdies and 11 pars, en route to a +2 round.
In a tie for 44th, Colombia native Daniel Franco Saad shot a 21-over par 237. Franco Saad opened the tournament strong, shooting a +3 75 in the first round. 12 shots behind Franco Saad was Bryce Gorrell, who shot a +33 and had sole possession of 76th place. Wrapping up the Colonials, in a tie for 79th, was Nicholas Mihalo, who shot a +39 255.
Robert Morris is off until March 30-April 1 when they travel to the Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational in Hellertown, Pennsylvania. The tournament is hosted by the Lafayette Leopards.
