MOON TOWNSHIP — Most of the Robert Morris University sports teams were home, but some of them were on the road. Here’s this weekend’s round-up to inform you of what happened.

2/22/19

Men’s Hockey: Robert Morris – 3; RIT – 5

RMU men’s hockey (10-20-1, 9-15-1 AHA) continued to struggle last Friday when they lost to the RIT Tigers (15-13-3, 13-9-3 AHA) by the score of 5-3.

RIT opened up the scoring in the first period at 9:52 when Brody Valette scored with an assist from Regan Seiferling and Abbott Girduckis, the brother of RMU’s Aiden Girduckis. This caused the Tigers to lead 1-0. The Colonials tied the game later on at 13:46 when Michael Louria scored on a power-play with an assist from Nick Prkusic and Luke Lynch to make the score 1-1. The period finished with a 1-1 tie going into the second period.

The RIT Tigers later retook the lead at the halfway point of the second period when Erik Brown scored with assists from Jake Hamacher and Adam Brubacher to lead 2-1 over RMU. The Tigers increased their lead to 3-1 when Kobe Walker scored with assists from Nick Bruce and Brubacher. The second period ended 3-1 in favor of RIT.

The third period saw Robert Morris tie the game with two consecutive goals. Justin Addamo got RMU to two goals when he scored with assists from Nick Lalonde and Geoff Lawson to make it a 3-2 game. Alex Tonge tied the game at 3-3 for the Colonials when he scored on a power play with backup from Daniel Mantenuto and Lynch. The Tigers scored the go-ahead goal when Brown scored for RIT with assistance from Girduckis and Hamacher to lead 4-3 over RMU at 13:36. RIT secured the win when Girduckis scored the final RIT goal at 18:18 with assists from Brown and Brubacher to win the game over RMU 5-3.

Men’s Hockey: RMU – 2; RIT – 2

While RMU men’s hockey (10-20-2, 9-15-2 AHA) didn’t win against the RIT Tigers (15-13-4, 13-9-4 AHA), they also didn’t lose, instead, Robert Morris and RIT ended the game in a 2-2 tie on Saturday.

Robert Morris acted quickly to open the scoring for RMU after losing the prior night when Aidan Spellacy scored just 14 seconds into the game with assists from Nick Prkusic and Sean Giles to lead over RIT 1-0. Justin Addamo bumped up RMU’s lead to 2-0 when he scored at 9:22 with backup from Luke Lynch.

When nobody scored in the second period, RIT decided to step up and cause problems for RMU when the Tigers’ Kobe Walker scored at 5:54 in the third period with assists from Nick Bruce and Dan Willett to make the score 2-1. RIT tied the game 2-2 at 14:56 when Erik Brown scored and Adam Brubacher and Jake Hamacher backed him up with assists. This proved to be the only goals that both RMU and RIT got as neither team scored in overtime and the game iended n a 2-2 tie.

Robert Morris ends their regular season next weekend when they travel to Mercyhurst University to play the Lakers (13-16-5, 11-11-4 AHA) on Friday, March 1 at 7:05 p.m. for game one and return to Colonials Arena for game two on Saturday to finish the season at 7:05 p.m.

Softball: North Carolina State – 6; Robert Morris – 5

RMU softball (2-3) faltered against the North Carolina State University Eagles (2-6) in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader in the Wings Etc. Classic, losing 6-5.

In the bottom of the third inning, after Brittney Seibert reached on an error, Abrielle McCartney homered to right center field to bring RMU out to a 2-0 lead.

North Carolina State countered against RMU’s two runs scored in the bottom of the third inning with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. After Madison Mifsud reached on a double to left field, Olivia Daniel homered to left field to tie the game 2-2. After Dalika Wallace walked and Tamiera Sanchez popped up to shortstop, Aleyah Evans homered to left field to score the go-ahead run and bring in two RBI. Evans’ home run brought in her and Wallace back to the dugout and North Carolina State took a 4-2 lead over the Colonials.

In the Eagles’ half of the seventh inning, Nadia Blevins singled to left field and later stole second, after that, Kaitlyn Macon singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw, but this caused Blevins to score for the RBI, advancing the Eagles’ lead to 5-2. After Tehillah Duffy came in to pinch run for Macon, Jacobia Johnson reached on a throwing error from third base and allowed Duffy to score the unearned run to lead over RMU 6-2. In the bottom of the seventh, Taryn Miller of RMU came in to pinch hit for Mala and singled up the middle. After Erika Bell and Seibert fouled and grounded out respectively, Miller was able to advance to second and later score after McCartney doubled to left center field to be down 6-3. The game and scoring ended after Natalie Higgins homered to left field to bring her and McCartney back to home plate to score. The game ended with a North Carolina State win 6-5.

Softball: Robert Morris – 0; USC Upstate – 8

RMU softball (2-4) did worse against the USC Upstate Spartans (8-1) than their game against North Carolina State, as the Colonials were no-hit in an 8-0 loss in the second game of their Sunday doubleheader in the Wings Etc. Classic.

In the bottom of the first inning, USC Upstate’s Kristen Wright singled to third base and advanced to second after that on a sacrifice fly. After Wright advanced to third on a passed ball, Alyssa Oakes singled to right field, causing Wright to score with an RBI single and lead over RMU 1-0. Madison Lanoux later singled to right center, advancing Oakes to third base. After Lanoux stole second base, Megan Obier reached on a throwing error, causing her to reach, Lanoux to advance to third base and Oakes to score for the Spartans, leading 2-0 over RMU.

Later in the bottom of the third inning, Wright singled to shortstop and Brittany Case singled to left field to start the inning. After each of them pulled off a double steal, Oakes homered to center field to lead over RMU 5-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Case singled to left center to start the inning. After Oakes doubled to right field, she was replaced by Riley Miller to pinch run for her. Lanoux doubled to left field after the substitution to cause Case and Miller to score for the Spartan to lead 7-0. Riley Sheehy came in to pinch run for Lanoux. Sheehy advanced to third after Obier grounded out. After the groundout, Alicia Dorgan singled up the middle to bring in Sheehy and win the game 8-0 for the Spartans since the game was conducted only in five innings.

RMU softball plays the Spartans again on Monday, Feb. 25 in a doubleheader at 10 a.m. and noon to finish up the Wings Etc. Classic.
