Robert Morris fought valiantly in their quest for a third CHA title, but ultimately fell short as the Mercyhurst Lakers defeated the Colonials 5-3 Saturday at the HARBORCENTER in Buffalo.

Why it happened:

While the Colonials started out strong and led after one, 2-1 it was the rash of sloppy puck play and unnecessary penalties that doomed the Colonials in the second and third. RMU’s power play failed to generate enough chances, and ultimately the Lakers took control on turnovers and power play opportunities given to them.

What it means:

With the loss, RMU’s season comes to an end, as they are officially eliminated from NCAA tournament qualification. The Colonials will also have to deal with a large group of seniors leaving the team next season, including star forward Brittany Howard, the Dapper Dan Sportswoman of the year and CHA player of the year.

Who was there:

The lack of offensive production from players like Brittany Howard and Jaycee Gebhard didn’t help the Colonials, as well as multiple unnecessary penalties that led to several Laker power play opportunities.

Who starred:

Emma Nuutinen and Vilma Tanskanen, the Finnish duo, worked their magic, contributing assists to several key Mercyhurst goals, in addition to Tanskanen setting up a streaking Nuutinen who put away a highlight reel goal that would put the Lakers up 4-2.

Who stumbled:

Brittany Howard and the Colonials power play — the leading point getter on the team failed to get any quality opportunities on the net and also took a double minor late in the third, putting her off the ice for a shift in which RMU struggled mightily on the PK. In addition, the Colonials’ usually red-hot power play seemed to go ice cold after their first opportunity, going only 2-for-5 on the night.
