A crowded Charles L. Sewall Center was on hand to cheer on the Robert Morris volleyball team Saturday afernoon against St. Francis (PA) as part of the team’s senior day festivites.

The Colonials took the match in three straight sets for their fifth sweep of the season, while earning the seven seniors a night they can remember.

“It’s hard to focus on senior night,” said head coach Dale Starr. “They did a great job of coming out with high energy and focus.”

Robert Morris, infamous for poor performances in the first set, showed up concentrated and ready to play. It was evident from the first minute.

“Throughout their four years, they have hung with it,” Starr said. “To their credit, they want to get out of here with a championship and that’s what they’re focused on.”

In the first set, the Colonials converted on 55% of their attack efforts, while also recording three blocks. The Red Flash sputtered, connecting on less than 40% of their swings, tallying a dismal zero blocks in the frame.

Seniors Alena Esposito and Sydney Sizemore both recorded three kills in the first set on the way to a 25-17 victory.

The Colonials continued to outshine St. Francis in the second set, taking it 25-13 with help from senior setter Hannah Hoffman’s seven assists and two digs. Senior outside hitter Erica Robb tallied two kills alongside six digs in the set.

“This being my last (home) game is really bittersweet,” said Robb. “But the fact that we went out on a really good note leaves a good tone; we did well tonight, and it feels good.”

RMU clinched the match with a 25-19 victory in the third set to claim their 11th conference win of the season. The team sits impatiently behind first place Long Island University (Brooklyn) by one game.

“Luck, if they’re lucky, only runs so far,” senior middle Becky Jay said. “We have what it takes to beat them.”

Assuming the Colonials defeat last place St. Francis (Brooklyn) next Saturday, the team will get a chance to take on the Blackbirds and spoil their 46 game in-conference undefeated record. If they can pull off the upset, both teams will share the NEC title.

“This is our chance to do it,” Robb said. “We’ve got to bring it home.”

Robert Morris looks to advance to 12-1 in conference play against St. Francis (Brooklyn) next Saturday in New York. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
