Colonials prepare for Three Rivers Classic

The Robert Morris University (RMU) NCAA men’s hockey team will be back in action on Friday as they take on the Penn State Nittany Lions (PSU) in the first game of the Three Rivers Classic.  For the Colonials, this will be their first game since defeating the Nittany Lions 3-2 on December 15 at Penn State.

“I think we can expect the same thing we saw last game. A hard-working team that does a lot of the little things right,” said senior captain, Brendan Jamison.  “We’re expecting a similar or even higher battle level from them at Consol because they know that’s what will make them successful.”

“We’re expecting a physical game, but our guys are prepared,” said redshirt junior, Andrew Blazek. “We will dictate the pace of the game.”

The Colonials know that it will be important for them to get off to a fast start against the Nittany Lions.

“I think it’s been evident this year that we usually win games when we come out with a good start, and conversely lose those games when we don’t,” said Jamison. “We have to come out and play our game, and that means a high battle level and relentlessness. If we do that we will be successful.”

For some of the team, this will be their first opportunity to skate at Consol Energy Center.

Freshman forward, David Friedmann is looking forward to the opportunity to play at the home of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“I’m most definitely looking forward to just playing in front of a huge crowd and taking down ranked teams,” said Friedmann.

There are currently six Colonials that hail from Pittsburgh or the surrounding area.  For them, the chance to play at the Consol Energy Center is extra special.

“I love Pittsburgh so it’s a great opportunity to play in front of my hometown. We love the support we’re getting from the hockey fans in Pittsburgh this season,” said Blazek.  “Consol provides a great environment and we’re hoping to see a big turnout.”

Jamison is also excited to play in front of the hometown crowd.

“Having grown up in Pittsburgh, these games always carry a special excitement and meaning to them,” said Jamison.  “This year is particularly exciting because it’s formatted as a tournament rather than a single game.”

Although Jamison has had multiple opportunities to play at the Consol Energy Center, this year holds special meaning now that he is captain of the Colonials.

“Wearing the C for an organization that took a chance on me is an incredible honor. In particular, serving as captain for this group of guys is nothing but a pleasure,” said Jamison.  “Commitment, pride, and a willing heart are all I can ask for, and these guys bring it every day. Wearing the ‘C’ for RMU at Consol is a dream come true for me.”

Game one of the Three Rivers Classic featuring the Colonials will take place on Friday, December 28 at 4:30 p.m. at Consol Energy Center.  Tickets are still available for this event at ticketmaster.com.
