After being named head coach in December, Jonathan Potter announced that Abraham Lopez has been named assistant coach for RMU men’s soccer this afternoon.

Lopez is a native of Caracas, Venezuela, who comes to the Colonials after being the assistant men’s soccer coach this past year at Presbyterian College. Potter also joined the squad from Presbyterian, so he is no stranger to Lopez.

“Abraham [Lopez] is a great young coach and a man of high character,” Potter said. “He will connect well with our student-athletes and will have a great impact in all areas of the program”.

In his one season in South Carolina, Lopez assisted in regional and national recruiting, helping produce six All-Big South honorees, as well as helping Presbyterian make its seventh appearance in the Big South Tournament.

Before his year at Presbyterian, Lopez spent two years as an assistant coach at Bethel University in Tennessee where he played a major role in skill development while coaching goalkeepers and working on game planning. He was part of a coaching staff that was named Mid-South Conference Coaching Staff of the Year, and he helped produce 11 All-Conference players and two All-Americans.

Lopez is a 2016 graduate of the University of Central Florida where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master’s in Health Administration in 2020 from Louisiana State University Shreveport. Following this, he began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at LSU Shreveport for two years.

He holds a “C” license with the United States Soccer Federation and the Venezuela Football Federation while possessing a United Soccer Coaches goalkeeper license. Abraham looks forward to joining the team and making the change with Coach Potter.

“Thank you to Coach Potter for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this program that has a history of winning and competing at the highest level,” Lopez said. “The history and culture of this program have given me confidence that this is the right place to be. I look forward to the spring semester to help develop the team in preparations for fall 2023.”
