MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.– After a two-game sweep of Cleveland State on Tuesday, the Robert Morris softball team (10-8, 5-5 Horizon) is back at it this weekend as they welcome the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (7-5, 6-2) to the North Athletic Complex. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. on Friday, with game two to follow. On Saturday, it will be a noon start time also with game two afterward.

Recapping RMU

The Colonials are in the midst of a three-game win streak, picking up a win in the final game against Green Bay and a clean sweep of Cleveland State. RMU has looked good on both sides of the ball as of recently, especially on the offensive side. Timely hits provided momentum that the Colonials were able to sustain. During this win streak, they have put up a combined 30 runs. This is something opposing pitchers do not want to see.

Scouting Oakland

The upcoming weekend series will be the first meeting between these two teams this season. Oakland comes into this series after playing some of their best softball of the year. Most recently, the Golden Grizzlies handed IUPUI (6-13, 4-5) a 3-1 series loss and did the same to Northern Kentucky (4-12, 3-5). Since getting off to a 1-3 start, Oakland has gone 6-2 and is currently riding a two-game win streak. It is also important to note that the bats have come alive for this Golden Grizzlies squad, putting up 20 runs in the Northern Kentucky series and 30 in the IUPUI series.

Players to Watch:

Natalie Higgins (RMU) – Higgins has been big for the Colonials this season, hitting a solid .426. On top of the .426 average, she has 27 RBI, four home runs, all while slugging .738. If she can keep hitting, RMU has a good chance to take this series.

Faith Miller (RMU) – Aside from a .409 batting average, Miller has managed to find her way on base quite frequently, with her on-base percentage sitting at .462. Expect her to work the count deep and find ways on-base. RMU is going to need lots of base runners against this tough opponent.

Lauren Griffith (OAK) – Griffith leads the Golden Grizzlies with a .364 average in the 2021 season. She has 16 hits in 44 at-bats while slugging .455. She will have to continue to hit to help the Grizzlies keep pace with the rolling Colonials offense.

Chelsea Wiggins (OAK) – The senior out of Marquette, Michigan has been a dominant force for Oakland on the bump this season. Wiggins has posted a 1.08 ERA in 12 innings pitched. It will be interesting to see how she matches up with Colonial hitters.

The offense for the Golden Grizzlies has been clicking as of late, as has RMU’s. I do not see the bats of either team cooling down, at least for this series. This one ends in a 2-2 series split.
