CANONSBURG, Pa.– The Robert Morris men’s soccer team (1-3-1, 1-3-1 Horizon) is set to face off against Northern Kentucky University on Thursday, March 18 at Southpointe Fieldhouse in Canonsburg. This will be only the second time the two teams have played in program history. In the other meeting, Northern Kentucky got the 3-2 victory over Robert Morris in 2018.

Recapping RMU

The Colonials last took the field on Friday, March 12 when they suffered a 4-0 loss against the University of Illinois Chicago. The Flames had several chances early in the game that were stopped by goalkeeper Mike Zolnierczyk. In the 37th minute, Roberto Alonso finished off a nice passing sequence to give UIC the lead. Pau Mateo buried one past Zolnierczyk after Miller Masson fouled, giving the Flames a 2-0 lead.

Jose Flores made it 3-0 just over five minutes later off of a penalty kick. RMU tried to fight back, with Jon Faynik and Bryan Akongo both having great chances, but UIC keeper Sokratis Vasilas denied both shots. UIC scored their fourth goal in the 72’ minute, sealing their victory and giving RMU their third loss of the season.

Scouting NKU

Northern Kentucky earned their fifth-straight win of the season on Friday, March 12, defeating Green Bay 3-2 in extra-time. Green Bay dominated possession in the early minutes of the match, taking their first shot and securing an early lead at the 6:35 mark. NKU attempted a couple of shots before Dylan Bufton made it an even game at the 36′ mark. NKU doubled their lead in the 40′ minute when Deryn Armstrong scored on a free-kick opportunity.

Green Bay tied the game on their first shot at 63:09. Neither side scored again in regulation, forcing extra-time. After uneventful overtime, the game was sent to the second round of extra-time. Ryan Godding converted the overtime winner off of a corner kick to seal the win.

Players to Watch

Jon Faynik (RMU) – Faynik lead the Colonials offense with a total of three shots in Friday’s matchup against UIC. If Faynik continues to register more shots on goal, he will definitely get the Colonials on the scoresheet.

Mike Zolnierczyk (RMU) – Zolniercyzk kept a struggling offense in the game with his multiple big saves throughout the game. Zolnierczyk has proven this season to be a strong goalkeeper for RMU and is not an easy opponent.

Dylan Bufton (NKU) – The sophomore midfielder was a huge part of NKU’s overtime victory against Green Bay. In Friday’s game, he registered a goal, an assist, and five shots. The Colonials defense will have to work hard to shut out Bufton.

Deryn Armstrong (NKU) – A freshman forward, Armstrong had three shots on goal in Friday’s match against Green Bay. He is a big part of Northern Kentucky’s offense and someone RMU will have to look out for.

I think that it will be a good game for both sides but the Colonials will ultimately fall 3-1 to Northern Kentucky.
