RMU gets first victory of season over Wright State

MOON TOWNSHIP– The Robert Morris women’s basketball team (1-8, 1-8 Horizon) finally got into the win column this season when they knocked off Wright State (9-4, 9-2) 50-43 on Friday afternoon. This victory was their first in the Horizon League as well.

Early on, the Colonials were playing fast with some great passing and physical post moves, getting off to a 6-0 start.

RMU led after one quarter 16-12 a very physical quarter with some sloppy plays. Sol Castro led the way with 9 points. The Colonials shot 32-percent from the field.

The Colonials’ fast passing was too much for the Raiders, they were able to get open shots for three and easy lanes to the hoop. That gave RMU a 29-21 lead at the half. The Raiders weren’t helping themselves, shooting 24 -percent from the field, and were only able to hit one three-point shot. They also had seven turnovers.

The Colonials shot 31-percent from the field in the first half, adding four three-pointers along the way. They also were able to hit all but one of their free throws. In the first half, the Colonials were able to outrebound the Raiders 24-22.

Sol Castro had a big first half with 14 points and five rebounds. She got help from redshirt junior Megan Callahan who added three points in the first half and three assists. The Raiders got a good first half by senior Tyler Frierson as she notched 11 points and six rebounds.

In the second half, Castro continued to have a great game. She was forcing turnovers, scoring, and passing really well. Wright State switched to a 3-2 in the third quarter, at first it was working, forcing RMU to take threes but when they decided to drive to the hoop the scoring began again. Wright State was able to stay in the game though, keeping it close.

At the end of three RMU led 40-35 the Colonials got some great plays from senior Holly Forbes who added six points and five assists. Sol Castro was able to net six points in the quarter and continued to play very well in the game.

In the fourth quarter, WSU got it started with a 5-0 run, getting the game to 42-40. Megan Callahan hit a huge three to make it 45-40. Then Castro got free on a press and was able to make it 47-40. RMU was able to hold on and get their first Horizon League victory 50-43, snapping an eight-game losing streak. Sol Castro had two career highs as she scored 23 points and 11 rebounds. The Raiders will be back at the UPMC Events Center Sunday as the Colonials look to get their second victory.
