MOON TOWNSHIP — Many RMU sports teams were at home for the start of their respective playoff series, but there were some teams on the road. Here’s the round-up to inform you about the games that RMU Sentry Media couldn’t get a reporter to.

RMU Softball – Louisville Slugger Invitational

By the end of the Louisville Slugger Invitational, RMU softball (3-15) got shutout in three games against Brigham Young University (8-9), UCLA (18-1) and Boston University (11-5) by the scores of 1-0, 11-0 and 4-0. The softball team managed to get only two total runs in the invitational.

In the game against BYU, Dana Vatakis pitched a complete seven innings, giving up only four hits, one earned run, one strikeout and three walks. Vatakis did not receive run support and had to take the loss because of it.

One of the only two runs that RMU got was against San Diego State (11-9) on Thursday when SDSU beat the Colonials 6-1. The only run got across when Natalie Higgins hit an RBI single to center to bring in Abrielle McCartney.

The other run that RMU got was against the Ohio University Bobcats (12-8). The run was scored when Briana Bunner doubled to right field to bring in McCartney.

In the game against UCLA, Robert Morris didn’t stand a chance going into that game after Vatakis pitched another start for the Colonials, going 3.1 innings and giving up nine hits with eight earned runs, one walk and one strikeout to go along with it.

Vatakis suffered more misfortune after she gave up four earned runs against Boston University. Vatakis pitched another seven innings, but she gave up seven hits to go along with the four runs mentioned and one walk and one strikeout as well in the loss.

Robert Morris moves on to face Penn State on March 20 at 5:00 p.m. for a doubleheader at State College.

Men’s Basketball: RMU – 62; Fairleigh Dickinson – 66

RMU men’s basketball (17-16, 11-7 NEC) had their season cut short when they fell against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights (19-13, 12-6 NEC) by the score of 66-62 on Saturday in the NEC tournament.

In the first half, Matty McConnell played for 16 minutes with three field goals, one three-pointer and seven points scored for RMU. Points scored from Charles Bain, Jon Williams, Yannis Mendy, Koby Thomas, Malik Petteway, Cameron Wilbon and Dante Treacy plus McConnell’s points totaled 26 points for the Colonials in the half.

Jahlil Jenkins played for 18 minutes with two field goals, three free throws and seven points scored for FDU. Points contributed from Darnell Edge, Mike Holloway Jr., Kaleb Bishop and Brandon Powell totaled 28 points for the Knights in the half.

For the second half, RMU totaled 36 points from McConnell, Bain, the Williams brothers, Mendy, Thomas and Petteway to end the game with a total of 62 points.

As for the Knights, Edge got 15 points for FDU coming from six field goals and three 3-pointers. Edge also got one rebound in the half. Jenkins, Holloway Jr., Williams and Powell to end the half with 38 points and end the game with 66 points.

Women’s Lacrosse: RMU – 6; George Washington – 12

RMU women’s lacrosse (3-2) played away at George Washington University, losing to the GWU Colonials (2-4) by the score of 12-6 after having the week off due to Robert Morris’ scheduled game against Duquesne University being postponed due to weather. GWU’s Katie Quinn ended up being a thorn in the Colonials’ side after she scored four of GWU’s goals. She scored three goals in the first half and an one man-up goal in the second half. As for the RMU Colonials, Kerri Sayrafe and Mackenzie Gandy each scored for Robert Morris, with Gandy scoring two of RMU’s first half goals. The first half ended with a 7-3 GWU lead. Four of George Washington’s goals from the half were unassisted. The two goals that Gandy scored were unassisted as well.

The second half was a similar story for both RMU and GWU. Robert Morris’ Meghan Crouse ended up scoring two of RMU’s goals unassisted with Sophia Eureka scoring the final goal for the Colonials. The GWU Colonials scored three man-up and two regular goals to win the game for George Washington 12-6 on Saturday. Robert Morris comes back to Joe Walton Stadium to host Gardner-Webb University (3-2) on Wednesday, March 13 at 3:00 p.m.
