The Robert Morris men’s soccer team (4-8-0, 2-1 NEC) returned from a four-game road trip this weekend with a big win. A mid-afternoon home game on a beautiful Sunday afternoon against the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers (4-8-0) (2-1) resulted in the second win in a row for the Colonials. Why it happened

Zac Sherman worked the offense in this one as he tallied the first goal of the game in the second half which went on to be the game winner. Sherman had three great partial breakaway opportunities in the game as well. Sherman was a little too aggressive on the first two, getting fouled on both, but on the third, he capitalized giving RMU the lead and eventually the win. This is their second win in a row.

What it means

Robert Morris was able to compete with a team that was almost exactly their skill level and eventually got the win for their first home conference win of the year. This is certainly a big win for the team as they played a complete game both offensively defensively and in net. RMU was able to outplay and defend a team with many offensive weapons and Winter Fondi was able to shut them all down and earn a clean sheet.

Who was there

Many penalties and fouls were present in this contest as the game got physical at times. As stated before, Zac Sherman had many opportunities on partial breakaways in this game but due to him fouling, Sherman went one for three on these attempts.

Who starred

Despite being trapped in their own zone at times, Robert Morris’ defense was clutch in this one. Whether they were blocking shots, making slide tackles or giving the forwards great passes, RMU’s defense certainly did their intended job. Winter Fondi was only tested on eleven shots, most of them not on goal due to great defensive pressure.

Who stumbled

Both teams played exceptionally well in this one and no one necessarily “stumbled.” However, in close games with evenly matched teams such as this one, the team that loses certainly suffers a bigger loss than normal, as this was a game that both sides could have easily won.
