Women’s hockey upsets #5 Mercyhurst

After falling to the Mercyhurst Lakers on Friday night, the Robert Morris University women’s hockey team made a stunning comeback to defeat the Lakers Saturday night. This win marks the first time in program history that the Colonials defeated the Lakers.

Junior forward, Cobina Delaney got the Colonials started with less than four minutes remaining in the first period when she tallied a power play goal. Brianna Delaney and Brandi Pollock were credited with the assists on Cobina Delaney’s seventh goal of the season.

Despite a scoreless second period, there were a great amount of chances for both squads on seven power play opportunities between the two. Junior goalie, Kristen DiCiocco turned away all 11 shots that came at her to keep the lead at one.

Mercyhurst was able to beat DiCiocco just three minutes into the third period to tie the game at one. Just four minutes later the Lakers struck again to take the lead off an even-strength goal.

Following the Mercyhurst goal the Colonials were able to get five power play chances, but were unable to connect on the first four.

With 2:48 remaining in the third junior defenseman, Jamie Joslin scored the Colonials second power play goal of the night to knot the game at two.

Just minutes later, with 53 seconds remaining in the game, sophomore Thea Imbrogno tallied the Colonials first even-strength goal of the game off an assist from freshman, Becca Vint to complete the comeback and seal the victory for the Colonials.

DiCiocco turned away 26 shots en route to handing the Lakers their first CHA loss of the season.

“It has taken far too long, but it feels great to get the win,” said DiCiocco. “This just proves that all the hard work and determination pays off.”
