Buckeyes snap Colonials eight game unbeaten streak

The Robert Morris University NCAA men’s hockey team saw their eight-game unbeaten streak come to an abrupt end when they lost to No. 4 ranked Ohio State University on Friday, December 30.  Despite two goals from sophomore forward and Pittsburgh native, Colin South, the Colonials still lost to the Buckeyes 4-2 in front of 4,927 fans at Consol Energy Center.

South opened the scoring when he scored on the power play 10:50 into the game.  Just over 2:30 later, Ohio State got on the board when Curtis Gedig scored his eight goal of the season for the Buckeyes.

At 16:17 South would score his fourth goal of the season, and second goal of the game to put the Colonials ahead two 2-1.  “It felt great to get a few goals tonight, not just because the game was at Consol Energy Center but also because I hadn’t scored in a while,” said South. “But as a Pittsburgh kid, it made it that much more special.”

South’s second goal would prove to be the final Colonials goal as Ohio State would go on to score three unanswered goals.

The eventual game winner came on a 5-on-3 Buckeye’s advantage 9:27 into the second period with senior defenseman, Josh Jones in the box for slashing and senior forward, Nick Chiavetta also in the box for goaltender interference.

“We’ve done a great job all year and I think it’s unfortunate that we got that second penalty it was just kind of a communication error and something we’re normally pretty good at,” said senior Captain, Trevor Lewis.   “But it happens every once in and while and it’s just something that we weren’t able to kill off today in the five-on-three.”

The Buckeyes would score an empty net goal with 14 seconds left in the game to make the score 4-2, Ohio State.

Although their unbeaten streak came to an end, Lewis still believes that there are positives to bring out of this game.

“The good thing is we didn’t lose any points tonight in our conference and we’re a confident group of guys,” explained Lewis.  “I think the guys in the locker room will tell you we think we can beat anybody in the country and the number next to the team doesn’t really do anything for us.  We’re still going to go out and play hard and just compete to our best ability.”

The Colonials will be back in action next Friday and Saturday, January 6 and 7, as they head to East Watertown, Massachusetts to face Atlantic Hockey Association opponent, Bentley with both games starting at 7:05.
