RMU Hockey trampled by Dartmouth

The Robert Morris Colonials were handed their worst loss of the season on Saturday night at the hands of the Dartmouth Big Green, 5-1.

After what could be considered their biggest wins of the season in the Three Rivers Classic, Robert Morris fizzled out in New Hampshire, getting outshot 37-18, not resembling the team that was seen last week toppling #8 UMass Lowell.

After a very tight first period capped by two RMU shots that clanged off the crossbar, the Big Green ended the first period with a 1-0 lead.

But while Dartmouth continued their same level of play in the second period, Robert Morris could not do anything with the puck, manufacturing a mere 2 shots on goal. Additionally, the Colonials spent 4 minutes in the penalty box, leaving Goalie Terry Schafer available to continue getting attacked in net.

The third period began with thoughts of a comeback,as Greg Gibson put in the Colonials first goal 49 seconds into the period, cutting Dartmouth’s lead in half. Soon after, RMU gained a power play, and the perfect chance to even the score. But Robert Morris was only able to muster one shot in those two minutes, missing their best opportunity at an equalizer.

Shortly after, a Dartmouth goal made it 3-1, and from there it only got worse for the Colonials, ending with a final score of 5-1.

What also can not be ignored is the animosity between Robert Morris and Dartmouth players. In the third period Matt Cope and Brett Patterson began to push and shove, leading to roughing penalties for both players and a 10-minute misconduct for Cope. This was after a game filled with brutal hits and chippy play from both sides.

Robert Morris finishes the Ledyard Classic tomorrow against the Union Dutchmen, hoping to end the tournament on a high note.
