Colonials create many shots, fail to score in 1-0 overtime loss

Sunday marked a heart-breaking loss for the Robert Morris women’s soccer team as they dropped a 1-0 overtime match to the visiting Bryant Bulldogs. This stopped a three-game winning streak for the Colonials and drops them to 5-8-0 on the season, 1-1-0 in conference play. Bryant improved to 4-9-1, tied for second in the NEC standings.

Robert Morris did an excellent job finding openings in the defense, but never found the net. Coach John Kowalski stated, “Their goalkeeper held on to everything…she didn’t make any mistakes and our shots were from a distance.” Bryant goalie Kaylan Conrad had a game-high seven saves.

The lone goal in the contest came in the 98th minute from the Bulldog’s Alison Guilmette, who also had three other shots.

The Colonials recorded 18 shots while allowing a season-low of seven. RMU had 11 of those shots in the first half, but wind played a factor and kept Robert Morris quiet the rest of the game.

Senior midfielder Kristie Hamilton led the stat line for the Colonial squad with five shots, two of those on goal.

Senior goalkeeper Chelsea de Jager went the distance for RMU stopping three shots. The lone goal was placed just out of reach of de Jager as Guilmette kicked a bloop shot that landed in the back-left side of the net.

Robert Morris has a four-game road trip coming, and for coach Kowalski, he still believes they can build off of this game.

“I thought we played a pretty good game overall. Unfortunately in soccer (sometimes) it takes a lucky shot…We can’t destroy everything we’ve been working on because we lost on a lucky shot,” said Kowalski. “All the things that we’re doing; moving the ball, passing, and going to the goal, we have to continue and be more effective.”

The Colonials will play again Friday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. in Loretto, Pa. against Saint Francis University (4-9-1, 4-0-0), who are in first place in the Northeast Conference.
