Head coach Derek Schooley mixed up the line shifts in an attempt to boost the offensive output against the Yellow
Jackets, with seemingly successful results.
Captain Cody Wydo notched an assist in the victory, while senior Scott Jacklin and junior Zac Lynch each scored their ninth goal of the season.
After establishing a commanding 5-1 lead over the opposition, the Colonials allowed AIC to
climb back into the contest by giving up two quick goals late in the third period from seniors
Alex MacMillan and Jason Popek.
“In college hockey, the game is never over,” junior forward Greg Gibson said. “You have to
play a full game.”
While victory tastes sweet, there was a potentially greater aspect of the team’s performance.
With the statistical success of Wydo, Jacklin, and Lynch, the squad’s primary forwards scored
some momentum in advance of a tough upcoming schedule.
“It’s good for their confidence to be able to score,” Schooley said. “They’re too easy to defend right now, so it’s good that they could contribute offensively.”
Squaring off against American International served as a warm up of sorts for a rigorous
conference schedule that includes games against third place Holy Cross (7-4-5 AHA) and a
resilient Air Force squad (6-6-2 AHA).
Seizing the opportunity to execute a well developed game plan while playing with a healthy
mental attitude was imperative to the Colonials.
“You’ve got to bring your game every time,” Gibson said. “You might get shut out by a better
team if you don’t prepare the same.”
The Colonials will be back in action Saturday in the second game of a weekend set with AIC. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. at the 84 Lumber Arena.
