Women’s Hockey vs. Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks

Colonials (2-0) Mavericks (3-1)

Robert Morris and Minnesota State are meeting for only the sixth time in the Colonials history, and the women’s hockey team is 2-2-1 against the Mavericks all time. The last time they played against Minnesota State, it was on December 3, 2011 and RMU won 2-1. Assistant captain, Brianna Delaney had a goal and an assist.

The next day, on December 4, 2011, the two teams tied 2-2 after an overtime period was played. Brianna Delaney again contributed, this time with a two-goals in the game.

The Colonials are off to a great start as they got their 2011-2012 season started with a weekend sweep over Lindenwood, and outscored their opponent in two games by a total of 15-2. Many players had a multipoint weekend, with freshman Rebecca Vint scoring 3 goals and adding 2 assists, and Freshman Katie Fergus also scoring 3 goals and contributing 2 assists.

Sophomore Thea Imbrongo had one goal and three assists, while junior Cobina Delaney had two goals and two assists. Senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney had 2 goals and 2 assists.

“It was a good weekend, and many players got points,” Brianna Delaney explained. “The scoring was not all coming from the same group of people.”

MSU is off to a great start as well on September 30 MSU got a win against Lindenwood University. It was a close game but MSU came out on top with a 4-3 win.

The next day MSU also earned a home sweep against Lindenwood winning 10-2.  On October 7, forward Nicole Germaine’s first goal of the season couldn’t have came at a better time as she put a rebound away with 49 seconds left in overtime, giving MSU the 3-2 win over eighth-ranked Mercyhurst. The win improved MSU’s record to 3-0.

On October 8 MSU’s winning streak was snapped against Mercyhurst after a goal was scored with two minutes remaining in the game, which gave the Lakers a 5-4 win over MSU.

Not only is RMU looking to keep their winning streak going and improve upon their 2-0 record but Brianna Delaney will be looking to break the all time point record in RMU women’s ice hockey history. Sara O’Malley was the all time point leader with 97 points, however on October 8, 2011 vs. Lindenwood University Brianna Delaney scored two goals and added one assist bringing her to 97 points.

Her teammates are excited for her to accomplish this milestone.

“It is really exciting that Bri is going to break the record at the beginning of her senior year when Sara only broke it her last few games of her senior year,” explained senior Captain, Paige Pietrangelo.
